JALAN KAKI MENJINAKKAN 9 PENYAKIT

1. Pertama-tama tentu menekan risiko serangan jantung.
Kita tahu otot jantung membutuhkan aliran darah lebih deras (dari pembuluh koroner yang memberinya makan) agar bugar dan berfungsi normal memompakan darah tanpa henti. Untuk itu, otot jantung membutuhkan aliran darah yang lebih deras dan lancar. Berjalan kaki tergopoh-gopoh memperderas aliran darah ke dalam koroner jantung.
Dengan demikian kecukupan oksigen otot jantung terpenuhi dan otot jantung terjaga untuk bisa tetap cukup berdegup. Bukan hanya itu. Kelenturan pembuluh darah arteri tubuh yang terlatih menguncup dan mengembang akan terbantu oleh mengejangnya otot-otot tubuh yang berada di sekitar dinding pembuluh darah sewaktu melakukan kegiatan berjalan kaki tergopoh-gopoh! itu.
Hasil akhirnya, tekanan darah cenderung menjadi lebih rendah, perlengketan antarsel darah yang bisa berakibat gumpalan bekuan darah penyumbat pembuluh juga akan berkurang. Lebih dari itu, kolesterol baik (HDL) yang bekerja sebagai spons penyerap kolesterol jahat (LDL) akan meningkat dengan berjalan kaki tergopoh-gopoh. Tidak banyak cara di luar obat yang dapat meningkatkan kadar HDL selain dengan bergerak badan. Berjalan kaki tergopoh-gopoh tercatat mampu menurunkan risiko serangan jantung menjadi tinggal separuhnya.
2. Kendati manfaat berjalan kaki tergopoh-opoh terhadap stroke pangaruhnya belum senyata terhadap serangan jantung koroner, beberapa studi menunjukkan hasil yang menggembirakan. Tengok saja bukti alami nenek-moyang kita yang lebih banyak melakukan kegiatan berjalan kaki setiap hari, kasus stroke zaman dulu tidak sebanyak sekarang. Salah satu studi terhadap 70 ribu perawat (Harvard School of Public Health) yang dalam bekerja tercatat melakukan kegiatan berjalan kaki sebanyak 20 jam dalam seminggu, risiko mereka terserang stroke menurun duapertiga.
3. Berat badan stabil.
Ternyata dengan membiasakan berjalan kaki rutin, laju metabolisme tubuh ditingkatkan. Selain sejumlah kalori terbuang oleh aktivitas berjalan kaki, kelebihan kalori yang mungkin ada akan terbakar oleh meningkatnya metabolisme tubuh, sehingga kenaikan berat badan tidak terjadi.
4. Menurunkan berat badan juga.
Ya, selain berat badan dipertahankan stabil, mereka yang mulai kelebihan berat badan, bisa diturunkan dengan melakukan kegiatan berjalan kaki tergopoh-gopoh itu secara rutin. Kelebihan gajih di bawah kulit akan dibakar bila rajin melakukan kegiatan berjalan kaki cukup laju paling kurang satu jam.
5. Mencegah kencing manis.
Ya, dengan membiasakan berjalan kaki melaju sekitar 6 km per jam, waktu tempuh sekitar 50 menit, ternyata dapat menunda atau mencegah berkembangnya diabetes Tipe 2, khususnya pada mereka yang bertubuh gemuk (National Institute of Diabetes and Gigesive & Kidney Diseases). Sebagaimana kita tahu bahwa kasus diabetes yang bisa diatasi tanpa perlu minum obat, bisa dilakukan dengan memilih gerak badan rutin berkala. Selama gula darah bisa terkontrol hanya dengan cara bergerak badan (brisk walking), obat tidak diperlukan. Itu berarti bahwa berjalan kaki tergopoh-gopoh sama manfaatnya dengan obat antidiabetes.
6. Mencegah osteoporosis.
Betul. Dengan gerak badan dan berjalan kaki cepat, bukan saja otot-otot badan yang diperkokoh, melainkan tulang-belulang juga. Untuk metabolisme kalsium, bergerak badan diperlukan juga, selain butuh paparan cahaya matahari pagi. Tak cukup ekstra kalsium dan vitamin D saja untuk mencegah atau memperlambat proses osteoporosis. Tubuh juga membutuhkan gerak badan dan memerlukan waktu paling kurang 15 menit terpapar matahari pagi agar terbebas dari ancaman osteoporosis. Mereka yang melakukan gerak badan sejak muda, dan cukup mengonsumsi kalsium, sampai usia 70 tahun diperkirakan masih bisa terbebas dariancaman pengeroposan tulang.
7. Meredakan encok lutut.
Lebih sepertiga orang usia lanjut di Amerika mengalami encok lutut (osteoarthiris). Dengan membiasakan diri berjalan kaki cepat atau memilih berjalan di dalam kolam renang, keluhan nyeri encok lutut bisa mereda. Untuk mereka yang mengidap encok lutut, kegiatan berjalan kaki perlu dilakukan berselang-seling, tidak setiap hari. Tujuannya untuk memberi kesempatan kepada sendi untuk memulihkan diri. Satu hal yang perlu diingat bagi pengidap encok tungkai atau kaki: jangan keliru memilih sepatu olahraga.
Kita tahu, dengan semakin bertambahnya usia, ruang sendi semakin sempit, lapisan rawan sendi kian menipis, dan cairan ruang sendi sudah susut. Kondisi sendi yang sudah seperti itu perlu dijaga dan dilindungi agar tidak mengalami goncangan yang berat oleh beban bobot tubuh, terlebih pada yang gemuk. Bila bantalan (sol) sepatu olahraganya kurang empuk, sepatu gagal berperan sebagai peredam goncangan (shock absorber).
Itu berarti sendi tetap mengalami beban goncangan berat selama berjalan, apalagi bila berlari atau melompat. Hal ini yang memperburuk kondisi sendi, lalu mencetuskan serangan nyeri sendi atau menimbulkan penyakit sendi pada mereka yang berisiko terkena gangguan sendi. Munculnya nyeri sendi sehabis melakukan kegiatan berjalan kaki, bisa jadi lantaran keliru memilih jenis sepatu olahraga. Sepatu bermerek menentukan kualitas bantalannya, selain kesesuaian anatomi kaki. Kebiasaan berjalan kaki tanpa alas kaki, bahkan di dalam rumah sekalipun, bisa memperburuk kondisi sendi-sendi tungkai dan kaki, akibat beban dan goncangan yang harus dipikul oleh sendi.
8. Ternyata bergerak badan dengan berjalan kaki cepat juga membantu pasien dengan status depresi. Berjalan kaki tergopoh-gopoh bisa menggantikan obat antidepresan yang harus diminum rutin. Studi ihwal tarbebas dari depresi dengan berjalan kaki sudah dikerjakan lebih 10 tahun.
9. Kanker juga dapat dibatalkan muncul bila kita rajin berjalan kaki, setidaknya jenis kanker usus besar (colorectal carcinoma). Kita tahu, bergerak badan ikut melancarkan peristaltik usus, sehingga buang air besar lebih tertib. Kanker usus dicetuskan pula oleh tertahannya tinja lebih lama di saluran pencernaan. Studi lain juga menyebutkan peran berjalan kaki terhadap kemungkinan penurunan risiko terkena kanker payudara.

Sekarang ini, di mana-mana begitu ramai dibicarakan The Secret, buku yang ditulis oleh penulis kelahiran Australia Rhonda Byrne. Buku yang menggemparkan ini telah memopulerkan nama Rhonda Byrne dan menobatkandirinya menjadi salah satu perempuan berpengaruh di dunia saat ini.
Apakah yang menarik dari buku The Secret ini?Intisari The Secret adalah The Law of Attraction atau hukum dayatarik. Inti dari hukum daya tarik ini adalah like attract like.Artinya, sesuatu akan menarik sesuatu yang mirip dengannya. Jadi,saat kita memikirkan sesuatu, dikatakan bahwa kita sedang menariksesuatu itu ke arah diri kita.
Bayangkanlah seorang ibu yang seringkali mengalami kecopetan.Masalahnya, setiap kali ke pasar, ia selalu membayangkan dan dihantuibayangan para pencopet. Setiap kali mengalami kecopetan, ia semakinketakutan dan semakin membayangkan hal itu terjadi lagi berulangkali. Pikiran si ibu itu menjadi magnet bagi para pencopet untukmendekatinya.
Di sisi lain, ada seorang mahasiswa teologi yang mengatakan saatdirinya melancong ke luar negeri, ia tidak memiliki tabungan cukupdan tidak kenal siapa pun. Setelah meminta, maka dibutuhkan keyakinan bahwa kitabisa menerimanya.Banyak orang meminta sesuatu, tetapi kemudian menjadi ragu-ragusehingga apa yang ada tidak betul-betul termanifestasikan. Tanpasadar terjadi energi 'penolakan' akibat keragu-raguannya.
Langkah terakhir adalah kemampuan kita untuk menerima atau, kalaupunbelum terasakan sekarang, tetapi merasa telah mulai dalam prosesmenerima apa yang diharapkan. Masalahnya, banyak orang tidak sabardan berhenti saat apa yang diharapkan tidak langsung terjadi. Otakmembutuhkan penyesuaian dan alam semesta membutuhkan waktumewujudkannya, tetapi kita sendiri harus meyakininya.
Lagi pula, penting pula kita untuk mendoakan dan mengharapkan bantuantangan dan izin Tuhan sehingga apa yang kita pikirkan terwujud.Sebab, bagaimanapun hukum ini kita imani berjalan sesuai dengankehendak-Nya.
Karena itu, doa dan keyakinan atas berlakunya the lawof attraction ini tetaplah menjadi hal penting.Akhirnya, the law of attraction ini mengingatkan kita satu halpenting. Marilah kita selalu sadar dengan apa yang kita pikirkan.
Hal ini akan menjadi sebuah medan magnet yang luar biasa.Bayangkan, melalui pikiran itulah kita sedang membuat lukisankehidupan kita sendiri. Kesimpulannya, kita, adalah apa yang kita bayangkan setiap hari.

DRINK WATER ON EMPTY STOMACH

It is popular in Japan today to drink water immediately after waking up every morning. Furthermore, scientific tests have proven a its value.

We publish below a description of use of water for our readers. Jangan Abaikan Sinyal Tubuh

Anda pasti pernah mengalami kedutan, cegukan, atau telinga berdenging. Sayangnya, sebagian besar dari anda seringkali mengabaikan tanda-tanda tubuh tersebut. Padahal menurut Dr. Karen Wolfe, penulis buku "Create TheBody Your Soul Desires", mengatakan bahwa tubuh yang mengalami kedutan atau cegukan bisa menjadi pertanda bahwa tubuh anda sedang mengalami gangguan ringan.

Namun meskipun gangguan tersebut tergolong ringan, tidak berarti anda harus mengabaikannya. Sebab, dengan memahami sinyal yang diberikanoleh tubuh diharapkan anda dapat lebih peduli pada tubuh sehingga tubuhmenjadi lebih sehat.

Kedutan Pada Kelopak Mata

Gerakan tak sadar yang diberikan oleh bagian tubuh anda ini menandakanbahwa tubuh anda kurang beristirahat dan tidur. IT MUST BE SETTLED TONIGHT

The burly miner blinked as he left the dark interior of the coal mine.Stopping at a faucet near the mine entrance, he washed the worst of thegrime from his face and hands, then headed towards his home on the outskirtsof the village. As he trudged along the dusty lane, he passed the open doorof a little church.
Inside, a small crowd listened intently as an energeticman gesticulated from the pulpit. Interested, the miner stepped to the door."Absolute surrender is what we must have," the minister was saying. "Are youwilling to surrender yourself absolutely into His hand? If not, you are notready to meet your God." The minister paced back and forth on the platform."We do not know how much longer our earthly probation will last.
Tonight youare living; tomorrow may be too late. Ask yourself, I beg of you, 'Am Iready to meet the Lord?'"The miner, touched to the quick, slipped into the back pew. I am not readyto meet God, he thought. I have lived a careless, godless life.
How can Imake peace with Him? The meeting ended, and the people filed out. Still theminer remained in the pew, his head in his hands.Finally, the minister touched him on the shoulder. "Brother, are you readyto meet the Lord?"Blindly, the miner shook his head. "I know I am not. Oh, help me findpeace!"An hour passed as the minister shared the plan of salvation; yet somethingheld the miner back from full surrender."It's getting late," the minister finally said. "Go home, and continue toseek the Lord."The miner shook his head. "Stay with me a little longer; it must be settledtonight.
"Once again the minister explained the way of salvation and prayed, but invain. Another hour passed."You must go home," the minister told him. "It's late, and I cannot make itany clearer.""It must be settled tonight," the miner repeated, his eyes burning withearnestness."Then we shall stay here together," the minister agreed.
Once more he spokeof Jesus, and shared promise after promise. Once more he prayed, but invain. "I must go," the minister finally said. "It will soon be morning. Gohome, and return tomorrow night. Maybe then you will find peace.""Sir, I cannot leave this place until I find peace."The poor man's voice trembled. "Tomorrow may be too late. It must besettled tonight."The minister could not resist his appeal. "By the help of God." he said, "itshall be settled tonight."Again he explained the steps of conversion; again he prayed.
As he spoke,the miner broke into sobs and tears, and at last the light pierced hisdarkness."I see it!" he cried. "I give myself absolutely to God, to His will, to doonly what He wants. Qn: You mentioned that Indians are three times more vulnerable. What is the reason for this, as Europeans and Americans also eat a lot of junk food? Ans: Every race is vulnerable to some disease and unfortunately, Indians are vulnerable for the most expensive disease.
Qn: Does consuming bananas help reduce hypertension? Ans : No.
Qn: Can a person help himself during a heart attack (Because we see a lot of forwarded emails on this)? Ans : Yes. Lie down comfortably and put an aspirin tablet of any description under the tongue and ask someone to take you to the nearest coronary care unit without any delay and do not wait for the ambulance since most of the time, the ambulance does not turn up.
Qn: Do, in any way, low white blood cells and low hemoglobin count lead to heart problems? Ans : No. But it is ideal to have normal hemoglobin level to increase your exercise capacity.
Qn: Sometimes, due to the hectic schedule we are not able to exercise. So, does walking while doing daily chores at home or climbing the stairs in the house, work as a substitute for exercise? Ans : Certainly. Avoid sitting continuously for more than half an hour and even the act of getting out of the chair and going to another chair and sitting helps a lot.
Qn: Is there a relation between heart problems and blood sugar? Ans: Yes. A strong relationship since diabetics are more vulnerable to heart attacks than non-diabetics.

Qn: Are people working on night shifts more vulnerable to heart disease when compared to day shift workers? Ans : No.
Qn: What are the modern anti-hypertensive drugs? Ans : There are hundreds of drugs and your doctor will chose the right combination for your problem, but my suggestion is to avoid the drugs and go for natural ways of controlling blood pressure by walk, diet to reduce weight and changing attitudes towards lifestyles.
Qn: Does dispirin or similar headache pills increase the risk of heart attacks? Ans : No.
Qn: Why is the rate of heart attacks more in men than in women? Ans : Nature protects women till the age of 45.

BELL"S PALSY

Bulan November kemarin, saya merasakan sesuatu yang aneh pada wajah saya. Ketika saya menggelembungkan mulut, bibir kiri saya tidak bisa menutup. Begitu juga ketika memicingkan mata. Mata kiri saya sama sekali tidak bergerak. Wajah bagian kiri saya sangat kaku. Mata kiri tidak bisa menutup. Hidung ketarik ke atas. Dan bibir bagian kiri menekuk ke bawah. Sekilas, wajah saya seperti orang ngambek. Lebih parah kalo lagi tertawa. Mimik wajah saya seperti orang yang sinis dan sangat menyebalkan.

Saya melakukan cek ke Dokter Spesialis Syaraf dan saya diberitahu kalau mengalami penyakit yang dikenal dengan sebutan Bell 's Palsy.


APA ITU BELL'S PALSY?
Dokter itu menceritakan kepada saya perihal Bell's Palsy.

Bell's Palsy (Facial Palsy) adalah kelainan di mana syaraf wajah (dikenal dengan sebutan Syaraf Ke-7 atau Cranial Nerve, yaitu syaraf yang mengontrol pergerakan wajah. Posisinya berada sekitar 1 jari di depan telinga kiri / kanan Anda) tidak berfungsi dengan baik / kaku / paralize. Akibatnya salah satu bagian wajah seperti tertarik / mencong. Penyakit ini biasa terjadi di kota atau negara bersuhu dingin. Selain itu, kelainan ini dapat menyerang pada orang-orang yang :
1. Terlalu lama berada di dalam ruang ber-AC.
2. Terkena semburan AC / kipas angin langsung ke wajah.
3. Mengendarai motor tanpa helm yang menutup wajah dengan rapat.
4. Mandi air dingin di malam hari.


APA BELL'S PALSY SAMA DENGAN GEJALA STROKE?
Berbeda dengan Stroke (yang sama-sama membuat salah satu bagian wajah mencong / ketarik), Bell's Palsy hanya menyerang syaraf wajah. Sedangkan fungsi tubuh berjalan normal. Namun ada beberapa kasus di mana Bell's Palsy menyerang syaraf otak, sehingga ada penderita yang tidak mampu berbicara jelas seperti penderita Stroke. Walau demikian, pikirannya masih sangat jernih dan dia masih dapat berkomunikasi dengan cara menulis.

Jika Anda terkena Bell's Palsy, segeralah berobat ke Rumah Sakit. Maksimal 2 hari setelah Anda mengalami kelainan itu. Jika tidak, syaraf yang kaku dapat mengganggu otak yang menyebabkan penderita lumpuh. Selain itu , wajah yang kaku akan semakin sulit dikembalikan ke bentuk asalnya.

Pengobatan yang disarankan dokter adalah fisiotherapy, di mana wajah penderita akan dikompres dengan lampu sinar dan diberi kejutan listrik di sekitar wajah. Namun Anda bisa juga menggunakan alternatif pengobatan lain, seperti akupuntur. Asal saya sarankan untuk tidak mencampur pengobatan fisioterapi dan akupuntur di waktu bersamaan. Saya dengar kabar ada seorang penderita yang wajahnya kaku total karena mencampur kedua pengobatan itu.

Waktu pengobatan cukup lama. Baik fisioterapi maupun akupuntur bisa 2-3 bulan baru sembuh, bahkan ada penderita yang hingga tahunan diobati tidak sembuh2. Semua itu tergantung dari ketelatenan kita dalam berobat. Jika ingin cepat sembuh, begitu mengalami kelainan, segera ke Rumah Sakit. Dan selama berobat, rutinlah mengikuti sesi pengobatan.


PENCEGAHAN
Seperti disarankan oleh Dokter Syaraf yang menangani saya, agar Bell's Palsy tidak mengenai kita, cara-cara yang bisa ditempuh adalah :
1. Jika berkendaraan motor, gunakan helm penutup wajah full untuk mencegah angin mengenai wajah.
2. Jika tidur menggunakan kipas angin, jangan biarkan kipas angin menerpa wajah langsung. Arahkan kipas angin itu ke arah lain. Jika kipas angin terpasang di langit-langit, jangan tidur tepat di bawahnya. Dan selalu gunakan kecepatan rendah saat pengoperasian kipas.
3. Kalau sering lembur hingga malam, jangan mandi air dingin di malam hari. Selain tidak bagus untuk jantung, juga tidak baik untuk kulit dan syaraf.
4. Bagi penggemar naik gunung, gunakan penutup wajah / masker dan pelindung mata. Suhu rendah, angin kencang, dan tekanan atmosfir yang rendah berpotensi tinggi menyebabkan Anda menderita Bell's Palsy.
5. Setelah berolah raga berat, JANGAN LANGSUNG mandi atau mencuci wajah dengan air dingin.
6. Saat menjalankan pengobatan, jangan membiarkan wajah terkena angin langsung. Tutupi wajah dengan kain atau penutup. Takut dibilang "orang aneh"? Pertimbangkan dengan biaya yang Anda keluarkan untuk pengobatan.

Sebagai catatan :
1. Wanita hamil berpotensi 3X lebih mudah terkena Bell's Palsy daripada wanita yang tidak hamil.
2. Penderita diabetes, perokok, dan pengguna obat-obatan sejenis steroid berpotensi 4X lebih mudah terserang Bell's Palsy daripada orang lain.
3. Rata-rata 40.000 orang Amerika setiap tahun menderita Bell's Palsy.
4. Terakhir, ini adalah catatan beberapa orang terkenal yang pernah menderita Bell's Palsy. Beberapa di antaranya sembuh total, namun tidak sedikit yang tidak sembuh sehingga hingga kini, wajah mereka masih tampak mencong akibat penyakit itu. Mereka adalah :

Hidup sehat ala Dr. Tan

HIDUP SEHAT ALAMI Dr. Tan Tjiauw Liat

KITA boleh iri melihat sosok Dr Tan Tjiauw Liat. Bukan hanya fisiknya yang segar, sehat, dan lincah (tinggi 167 cm/berat 59 kg) tapi daya ingatnya juga luar biasa. Selama wawan­cara dua setengah jam, ia membuka lebih dari 10 buku, di antaranya How To Use Glutamine to Strengthen the Immune System, Improve Muscle Mass & Heal the Digestive Tract, The Anti-aging Zone, dan Water Cures: Drugs Kill untuk menunjukkan latar belakang pendapat­nya. Buku-buku tersebut hanya sebagian kecil dari koleksi buku yang berjajar rapi di dalam lemari bukunya.

Saya benar-benar kagum pada dokter berusia 76 tahun itu. la bukan hanya ingat warna cover buku, judul, atau tempat buku itu disimpan, melainkan hafal di luar kepala isi buku-buku itu. Mulai dari alinea, kalimat, yang sudah diberi dua garis dengan tinta merah, sampai kata per kata!. Luar biasa....

Buku-buku, jurnal-jurnal kesehatan, news­letter, baginya merupakan harta yang tak terni­lai. Ketika banjir melanda Jakarta tahun 2002, rumahnya di bilangan Pluit tak luput dari ben­cana. Anak-anaknya khusus menyewa truk dan jukung untuk mengevakuasinya, namun Dr Tan tetap bertahan hanya mengungsi ke ru­mah tetangganya. la enggan beranjak dari rumahnya. "Lantaran buku-buku saya masih di dalam," katanya. la hanya minta dibawakan sayuran mentah sebagai menu makannya.


Senjatanya: tomat dan mentimun
Pukul 15.00 saat mewawancarai Dr Tan di tempat praktiknya di Pluit, tampak beberapa pasien yang mengalami stroke mulai berda­tangan. Beberapa pasien harus dipapah atau didorong di kursi roda, untuk sampai ke ruang praktik. Pria berkacamata yang sore itu menge­nakan kemeja putih lengan pendek itu lang­sung berdiri dan membuka pintu kamar prak­tiknya. Dengan suara yang nyaring yang meru­pakan ciri khasnya, ia menyapa para pasien dan memperkenalkan mereka kepada saya.
"Ini pasien saya yang sudah berumur 100 tahun. Nah, bapak yang itu tadinya stroke berat, sekarang sudah bisa jalan. Pasien yang duduk di kursi roda itu otaknya sudah dibedah di rumah sakit. Waktu datang tidak berdaya sama sekali, tetapi setelah saya anjurkan makan tomat dan mentimun, kondisinya jauh lebih baik," ujarnya sambil menunjuk ke arah pasien­-pasien yang dimaksud. Mereka tampak ceria, dan mengatakan bahwa gairah hidupnya kembali setelah dirawat dengan penuh kasih sayang oleh Dr Tan.


Dulu 'kapal keruk'
Dokter Tan mengaku kesadaran akan pentingnya hidup sehat, tumbuh sejak lima tahun terakhir ini. "Sedari kecil saya doyan makan. Kalau sedang ada perayaan Cap Go Meh, Nenek menyediakan berbagai macam makanan enak. Tentu saja saya 'sikat' sampai perut saya keras kekenyangan," tuturnya.

Kebiasaan makan enak itu terus berlanjut sampai ia bersekolah di Jakarta. "Waktu itu saya indekos di Jalan Raden Saleh. Dalam waktu 3 bulan, berat badan saya bertambah 13 kg," katanya. Sampai ia berkeluarga, ia belum bisa mengerem kebiasaannya itu. "Saya sering makan di hotel berbintang lima yang memberi diskon 50% untuk paket makan sepuasnya (all you can eat) Saya pikir, kapan lagi bisa makan enak dengan harga murah? Di sana saya bisa ngopi dan makan sepuasnya," tutur Dr Tan mengenang kebiasaannya ketika ia berusia 60 tahun.
Bukan Dr Tan namanya jika berbicara tanpa data. Dari lacinya, ia menge­luarkan selembar foto diri saat bobotnya 80 kg. Penampilannya sama sekali berbeda dengan sosok yang berada di depan saya!
Namun setelah itu badannya mulai terasa tidak nyaman. Pada waktu berjalan, misalnya, dadanya terasa sesak. "Padahal saya rajin mengukur tekanan darah, dan hasilnya normal, 120/80," katanya.
Pada satu kesempatan berkunjung ke Australia menengok seorang anaknya yang bersekolah di sana, ia mendatangi seorang dokter. Dari pemeriksaan yang dilakukan oleh dokter itu, diketahui tekanan darahnya melesat sampai 180. "Dokter menyuruh saya minum obat. Tetapi saya bilang, NO!. Saya katakan kepadanya, saya akan kembali tiga bulan lagi, dan saya pasti sudah sembuh," ujarnya.

Pulang dari dokter, ia langsung ngeloyor ke toko buku mencari buku kesehatan. "Saya tidak mau sakit, saya ingin panjang umur. Nah, sejak itu saya gandrung membaca buku-buku mengenai kesehatan," katanya.


Sekolah di Internet
Latar belakang pendidikannya sebagai dokter lulusan FKUI tahun 1958 dan spesialis radiologi sangat mendukung keinginannya untuk menemukan kunci hidup sehat. Penguasaannya terhadap bahasa Inggris, Belanda, dan Mandarin secara aktif memudahkannya membaca dan menyerap ilmu kesehatan dari berbagai sumber.
"Sampai sekarang saya masih belajar dan terus belajar. Sekolah saya Internet. Media cybernet atau penjelajahan situs-situs Internet yang dapat dipertanggung­jawabkan, semakin memperluas wasasan saya," ujarnya sambil menyebut situs favoritnya: www.mercola.com.
Hampir setiap hari ia duduk di depan laptop-nya dari pukul 23.30 sampai pukul 05.00, mencari berita kesehatan yang aktual. Dengan demikian, ia tidak pernah ketinggalan informasi. Sebelum duduk di depan laptop, ia selalu melakukan meditasi terlebih dahulu dengan bantuan CD yang berisi suara gemercik air hujan. "CD tersebut dipakai untuk meningkatkan kemampuan fokus. Sudah setahun lebih saya menggunakan CD untuk meditasi," ujarnya. Gadget IT milik orang kantoran masa kini adalah mainannya di usia kepala tujuh. la mahir mengoperasikan komputer dengan segala programnya, merekam dengan USB, sms dijawab melalui PDA-nya dengan kecepatan anak muda, mengirim faksimili pun dilakukannya sendiri.

Ada apa dengan tomat dan mentimun?
Hasil bacaan dan penelusuran di alam maya itulah yang menelurkan gaya hidup dan pola makan yang diterapkannya sekarang.
"Unsur genetika spesies manusia yang dibawa DNA-nya pada kenyataannya tidak pernah berubah sejak zaman purba hingga kini; bahkan di masa mendatang," katanya. Yang berbeda adalah yang ada di sekeliling kita, sebagai hasil dari kecerdasan manusia dan olah teknologi. Ini yang mempengaruhi cara hidup manusia dan cara mengelola hidup termasuk makanannya, serta bagaimana tubuh bereaksi terhadap apa yang dikonsumsi.
Gen (pembawa sifat keturunan yang terdapat pada inti sel) adalah rangkaian gugusan DNA yang tidak mungkin mengalami perubahan dalam waktu singkat. Perubahan pada struktur gen membutuhkan waktu ribuan tahun lamanya akibat paparan (ter-expose) oleh lingkungan yang juga telah berubah dalam kurun waktu sekian lama.

Banyak bukti antropologis (bukan hanya dari sisi medis) yang menjelaskan bahwa penyakit yang muncul saat ini adalah sebagai akibat pola makan, gaya hidup, dan paparan lingkungan. Yaitu karena manusia sudah jauh melenceng ke luar dari rel sebagaimana alam.
Hidup di zaman sekarang tidak bisa terlepas dari polusi, dan kepungan penyakit yang membuat kita mudah sakit. Bagaimana mengantisipasinya? "Pertama insulin harus dikontrol, dan yang kedua pola makan kita harus mengikuti pola makan manusia purba. Manusia purba tidak mengenal api, apalagi kompor dan microwave. Segala sesuatu dikonsumsi secara mentah (raw) dan segar (fresh). Dengan asupan serupa ini tidak heran tubuh akan jauh lebih tahan terhadap segala sesuatu," tuturnya.

Lalu, untuk apa ada restoran? "Restoran itu suatu kebudayaan (civilitation). Itu bukan untuk kesehatan kita. Jika untuk kesehatan, kita harus balik ke DNA kita. Kita hanya makan dedaunan atau sayuran mentah. Tidak ada cara lain. Kalau tidak demikian, pasien saya pasti gagal semua....," katanya dengan lantang.


Sayur mentah satu baskom
Dokter Tan, tidak hanya cuap-cuap memberi nasihat kepada pasien-pasiennya agar mengkonsumsi sayuran mentah untuk mengobati stroke yang mereka derita, tetapi dalam keseharian ia benar-benar mempraktikannya dengan disiplin. "Pukul 6 pagi saya makan buah. Buah yang ada dalam simpanan saya. Kalau ada apel ya itu saja yang dimakan, tapi bukan buah manis tinggi fruktosa seperti pepaya, pisang atau mangga ranum," katanya.
Menurutnya, dari tengah malam sampai jam 12.00 terjadi siklus pembuangan, sebaiknya perut tidak diisi dengan makanan berat. "Siang hari saya makan sayur mentah. Banyaknya satu baskom (mangkuk besar) yang ditambah jahe, kunyit, masing-masing ukuran satu jari, dan satu siung bawang putih. Semua bahan itu dimasukkan ke dalam juice-extractor- bukan blender atau juicer biasa. juice extractor ini mempunyai putaran mesin hanya 30 rpm sehingga tidak menimbulkan panas di atas 30 derajat Celsius, dan ekstraksi mineral terjamin sempurna. Selain itu saya juga makan satu kuning telur mentah organik yang jelas bebas bakteri," katanya. Siang itu sayur yang memenuhi baskomnya terdiri dari brokoli, selada, paprika kuning, tomat, dan mentimun yang dipotong-potong. la adalah pelaku raw-food yang setia dan me­ngerti betul dasar latar belakang mengapa makanan yang disantap harus raw alias men­tah.

Air putih adalah minuman terbaik, karena dapat menggelontor lemak-lemak tubuh. Seberapa banyak kita minum air putih per hari? "Ukurannya yaitu sampai urine kita tidak berwarna. Urine yang sehat adalah yang bening seperti air ledeng, tidak boleh berwarna," katanya.

Dengan mengubah pola makannya, Dr Tan merasa badannya nyaman dan lebih energik. Bobot tubuhnya pun proporsional dengan tingginya. la berhasil menurunkan berat badannya 21 kg dari berat semula 80 kg. Bukan hanya itu, daya ingatnya pun semakin tajam. "Waktu kuliah dulu, kalau ada teman yang menyebut suatu masalah, saya langsung ingat masalah itu dibahas di buku apa, halaman berapa. Nah, di usia saya sekarang ini, daya ingat saya kembali seperti itu.

Sekarang ini Dr Tan masih sering ke hotel bintang lima untuk makan, tapi ia lebih cerdik. "Saya pilih light lunch, ya murah, ya sehat. Saya bisa makan salad sesuka saya," katanya.

Human beings possess three bodies. First, there is the physical body, which you can see and is tangible. It is solid and has a shape, a color and a texture. The second and third bodies are the mental and the spiritual which are intangible and merge with the physical body. Our true nature begins to take on a physical form in our face. It is where our emotions and our state of health are first revealed. And, as Shakespeare pointed out in his play Macbeth: “There’s no art to find the mind’s construction in the face.” For the face is truly an opened book.

For thousands of years, the ancient sages wondered if our facial features could determine our fate or personality. They began to compile individual studies, one feature at a time, to see if there was a direct correlation between facial features and specific fates. In ancient Greece, Aristotle wrote extensively on physiognomy categorizing his findings into six chapters that included physical characteristics of face, body & voice. The Classical scholars, such as Homer and Hippocrates, wrote of face reading as an ancient method of practical philosophy. In the Middle Ages physiognomy was combined with astrology and became part of the divination arts. By the 18th & 19th century it was used in Europe as a separate study of criminology where facial features were used to identify potential criminals. In the 20th century it was lost to folklore and superstition. But, face reading has reemerged in the 21st century as a guide in psychoanalysis or, as a tool for a competitive edge in the executive boardrooms of corporate America. It is no longer a parlor game. The continuos interest in face reading has given credence to an art that the Chinese have always known has been an important guide in human understanding.

In China, the father of face reading is often credited to the philosopher Gui-Gu Tze, who lived during the Warring State Period (481-221 BC). His book Xiang Bian Wei Mang is still in print to this very day and is studied by serious students of physiognomy.

The Chinese art of face reading is a very involved system that classifies facial features individually by judging the color, shape and disfigurements of specific areas of the face. Basically, the face is partitioned into 108 areas. Each area is a specific age & life situation and by observing the Five Elements of the productive/destructive cycle and the Taoist theories of yang & yin, it may be possible to predict events, diagnosis illnesses or to understand a person’s personality.



To become proficient in face reading it is important to memorize the bagua and to understand what each trigram represents. The bagua becomes an important tool in dividing the face into seasons, body sites and specific life situations. If you look at figure you can see that when you place it over a person’s face the trigrams fall into their appropriate locations. Li, the South, is at the forehead; it is Fame & represents fire. We can be assured that if the forehead is auspicious recognition will come our way. The center of the face is the Tai Chi. A black mole on the bridge of the nose spells disaster since water (black) weakens the Earth. The chin is Kan, which is water on the bagua and if the color red (fire) appears here an illness to our urinary tract or related organs may occur. A blemish in schun could mean a chronic illness that reoccurs in late spring or that a financial problem might be burdening you. A scar at the right temple (Kun) may indicate that a close relationship has suffered.

We now measure the face into the Three Stages of the Chinese trinity of Heaven, Man and Earth. The First Stage, which is Heaven, starts at the hairline down to the eyebrows. This represents our childhood. The Second Stage, which is traditionally known as Man, starts at the brow and ends at the area just below the nose tip. This is our middle years. From the nose tip to the bottom of the chin is our old age or the Third Stage and it is called Earth. It is important that the distance between each Stage is even in length. If one Stage is 1/3 less in size then life could be difficult at that particular period of life. A short, narrow forehead may indicate an unhappy childhood. A large forehead may tell us this person will come into society early. The Second Stage announces: “This is my life!” If it is open or has a happy feeling then this person may have, thus far, a good life. But, a short Third Stage may reveal a short life contrary to a long chin, which indicates a long life.

There are Four Turning Points of Life on the face. They are called Gates. The first Gate is between the eyebrows or the Third Eye and it is the age 41. The second Gate is located just under the tip of the nose and it is the age 51. The third Gate is right under the lower lip and it is the age 61. And, the last Gate is at the bottom of the chin and it is the age 71. These Gates are considered a “critical age” and that any scars, lines, inauspicious moles or blemishes here may predict difficulties around that age.

The Chinese also use the shapes and characteristics of the Five Elements to further describe a personality. A Fire face will be pointy like a triangle. For example, high, prominent cheekbones. They could be quick-tempered. A Wood face is long, rectangular in shape. They could be stubborn. A Water face is soft & round and may posses a long jawline. They can be flexible. Whereas, an Earth face is thick and they may be generous. And, a Metal face is square, especially the jaw & forehead. They can be self-indulgent.

The ancient Chinese also made a distinction between what was considered fortunate or unfortunate for either a female or a male. In order to keep harmony in a marriage what may be desirable on a man was not desired on a woman. For example, high prominent cheekbones and a very high forehead on a woman would not make a desirable mate. That’s because high cheekbones indicate aggression & competitiveness and a very high forehead is power. The ancient sages felt it was best that only the man wore the pants in a household. But, a look through any fashion magazine can tell you that in modern times high cheekbones are considered attractive, as well as, a prerequisite for any aspiring fashion model or actress. A summary of the chin:

Auspicious: Full, fleshy, broad & long.
Inauspicious: Thin, short, pointed or
receded, dimpled or broken.

A summary of the eyes:

Auspicious: Large size; wide-set;
dark pupils with silvery whites.
Inauspicious: Small; close-set;
small pupils and discolored whites.

Face reading is a subjective art and therefore it is as reliable as the person who is doing the interpretation. But that is what makes art an art. Now that we have a basic feel for physiognomy we can look at some famous faces & see if we can get to know them better.



Besides his handsome good looks, there are other signs in Russell Crowe’s face that could have predicted his success. As we divide his face into the Three Stages, we see his high board forehead as an indication of a good childhood. His forehead is long & wide which indicates intelligence & a good imagination. A shiny forehead tells us he is destined for success & recognition. The eyebrows, which represent siblings, are straight & orderly and this says that his relationship with them is good. However, his brows are set quite close to his eyes, which reveal his impatience for others, even for the slightest offense.

The First Gate, the area between his brows, is auspiciously wide but is marred by a mole. This could indicate some difficulties in life, especially around the age of 41. His attractively fleshy, plump nose tip gives him a warm & friendly spirit.

Russell’s long chin means a good life in his old age, but the slight dimple may indicate a strained close relationship later in life. His ears are close to his head and are positioned above his eyebrows. This is a favorable position for the ears, for he will be well respected and have a high social status early in his life. Russell’s eyes are elliptical and the upper eyelid is angled down towards the outer corner of his eyes. This eye shape indicates charm & jealousy and a craving for affection and attention that makes it difficult for friends, lovers and spouses to satisfy.

His low, round cheekbones suggest that he is neither highly competitive nor overly aggressive, especially since moles mar them. In spite of his reputation for bar-brawling and being hot tempered, I see instead a man who has the capacity for endurance and quiet resistance, who can wear down his strongest adversary with subtle tactics. Russell’s bow shaped lips, created by the low dipping “point of refinement”on the upper lip, indicates an imaginative, caring & sensitive lover. But, outside the bedroom he may be timid and touchy. Also, this rose bud shape in the middle of the upper lip often means that should he marry he’ll have a deep love for his spouse.




In a recent woman’s magazine, I read that Angelina Jolie’s full-pouting lips are the most requested shape of mouth that women are asking their plastic surgeons to give them. And, no wonder, for thick lips express honesty, loyalty and friendliness. People with thick lips enjoy delicious food, but may have poor “taste” in general. Other inauspicious qualities are, surrendering too much to their emotions and excessive sexual indulgences (but, that may be the reason we find thick lips sexy, yes?).

Angelina’s mouth tells me she is very demanding of the affections from others. Her sexual appetite is also very strong. However, the top lip is shorter than the bottom, which says that she can reach sexual satisfaction before her partner. On the positive side, her lips indicate good health, intelligence, lasting friendships and a rewarding life in her old age.

I’ve noticed that Angelina’s eyebrows are not asymmetrical (eyebrow pencil aside). Since the eyebrows represent siblings it may mean she has stepsiblings (half brothers/sisters). Eyebrows that don’t match often suggest one’s parents are separated or there’s a fluctuation in the family life. Personality wise, it can also indicate moodiness. Her eyebrows are arched high above her eyes which makes her very tolerant of others, as well as, patient & easy going. She makes friends easily & keeps them forever.

And then there are those high cheekbones and large eyes, which from an Asian point of view indicate a strong desire to compete while large eyes make her extroverted and outspoken. A woman’s nose is called the “Husband’s Star” (for a man it is the 5th House of Wealth). Her nose has a round nose tip & a straight bridge that is not too high which traditionally secures a loving husband. But, her visible nostrils say that she is a not good with money.

Face reading can be quite challenging and insightful. It can help you to better understand the people around you. First impressions will have a new meaning to you when you find yourself accurately predicting personalities, future events or possible health problems.
